A fire damaged a Salt Lake City home early Saturday morning.

Firefighters responded to a home in the 600 East block of Hollywood Avenue (1965 South) shortly after 5 a.m., said Scott Freitag, a spokesman for the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

Fire broke out in the home's attic and caused about $80,000 in damage, Freitag said. An elderly woman and her two dogs were in the house at the time. Firefighters extinguished the blaze after about 45 minutes. No injuries were reported.

The Greater Salt Lake Area chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the homeowner with food, clothing and shoes, said spokeswoman Susan Thomas. The woman will stay with a neighbor until she is able to find new housing.

Freitag said the woman's utilities had been shut off and that the home wasn't a safe place for her to stay before the fire broke out.

"We're not quite sure what the lady's circumstance was, in being in there," Freitag said. "She probably shouldn't have been living there."

He said investigators had not determined what caused the fire, which has been ruled accidental.
