A 3rd District Court judge on Friday ordered a West Valley City mother who beat her 7-year-old boy with a sandal, belt and kitchen spatula earlier this year to leave the country and pay a fine in connection with the crime.
Ana Lilia Reyes-Ramirez, 25, was charged with second-degree felony child abuse for assaulting her 7-year-old because he wouldn't stop eating dinner to take a shower.
The boy had bruises and red marks on his body as a result of the abuse, which took place in September in the 2000 West block of Theresa Cove (3605 South), according to charging documents.
She pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of third-degree felony child abuse in October.
Judge Vernice Trease sentenced Reyes-Ramirez to up to five years in the Utah State Prison, but suspended the term and ordered the woman to serve 36 months of probation and to pay a $2,500 fine.
Reyes-Ramirez's probation requires her to submit to deportation or leave the country voluntarily within 10 days of her release from custody. Reyes-Ramirez must serve a 200-day jail sentence, and received credit for time served in the Salt Lake County jail since Aug. 31.
Trease's order states that Reyes-Ramirez may not re-enter the country illegally.
A witness told police Reyes-Ramirez dragged the boy by the hair into a bedroom, where she beat the child. The witness told police she heard the boy crying as well as "hitting noises," charges state. The witness said the boy
Police who reported to the scene saw red marks and abrasions on the boy's body and also noticed what appeared to be older bruises, charges state.
Reyes-Ramirez admitted to police that she hit her son four to five times with her flip-flops and a kitchen spatula. She then kicked the child "to get his attention," according to charges.
The mother also admitted pulling the boy's hair and hitting him "a couple times" with her hand because she was angry the boy wouldn't stop eating dinner to take a shower, charges state.
