He may not have stuck his tongue to a cold metal pole, but a Bennion Junior High student took a similarly ill-advised dare Thursday afternoon and spent the rest of the school day in the hospital.

Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley said the teen was in between classes at the Taylorsville school, 6055 S. 2700 West, when he and friends spotted a scaffold in a corner of the cafeteria, which was set up to change light bulbs. The boy was dared to climb the rig.

As he was climbing, a school janitor came by and ordered him to come down; he did, leaping down about 10 or 15 feet and landing painfully.

"He was very remorseful about the incident," Horsley said, adding the boy was taken to a local hospital to be checked out but did not appear to be seriously hurt.

"He was conscious and talking while the emergency personnel took him out," Horsley said.

Unified Fire Authority Capt. Clint Meacham said the boy, 14, may have suffered a broken ankle.
