A North Ogden man is to appear in 2nd District Court next month to face criminal charges for allegedly injecting heroin into a friend's intravenous tube.

Ogden police identified the defendant as Ryan Tyler Knighton, 23. He allegedly gave the drug to a woman he was visiting at Ogden Regional Medical Center in August. She had been hospitalized after having accidentally injected heroin into an artery instead of a vein, causing her to nearly lose a hand.

Knight allegedly injected the heroin into the woman's IV at her request, but when she subsequently stopped breathing he fled the hospital.

Police say Knighton recently turned himself in, was booked and released at Weber County Jail after being charged with felony aggravated assault and distribution of a controlled substance.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 8.
