Unified Fire Authority crews responded to a fire at a vacant Riverton house Saturday.

Smoke and flames were visible when firefighters arrived in the 13300 South block of Redwood Road (1700 West) at about 4:35 p.m., said Capt. Clint Smith. They extinguished the blaze within 15 minutes of arriving, he said. The fire caused the most damage in the home's basement, he said.

Investigators determined the fire started when the home -owner soldered a waterline in the home with a blow torch, which he later placed in a bucket with a piece of carpet over the top. The blow torch either wasn't turned off properly or was too hot and caused the carpet to catch fire, Smith said.

Also, the homeowner had set off a bug bomb in the basement, which ignited when the fire from the carpet spread, Smith said.

The fire caused about $25,000 in damage. The home -owner wasn't around when the fire started, Smith said. No injuries were reported.

The homeowner was preparing the property to rent out, so no one was displaced by the fire.

Another house fire reported in West Valley City caused about $30,000 to a home near 3200 South and 3200 West, said West Valley City Fire Chief John Evans. That fire was caused from faulty electrical wiring that started a fire in the family of five's attic, Evans said. No injuries were reported.
