Utah Highway Patrol troopers found nine kilograms of cocaine after pulling over a van for speeding Thursday on Interstate 15 near the Cedar City interchange.

The silver Chrysler was traveling 11 mph over the speed limit, troopers said, and the van smelled of marijuana when officers talked with the occupants. The 18-year-old male driver and 37-year-old female passenger told the trooper they had smoked marijuana recently and consented to a search of the van, troopers said.

A drug dog indicated there might be something in the back of the van, where troopers found garbage, including moldy french fries, pushed against a back panel. Behind the panel were packages of cocaine.

The two people in the van denied knowing about the drug, troopers said.
