Salt Lake City police have recovered a car stolen in a robbery and carjacking Thursday, but are still looking for the thief.

About 7 a.m., a woman was sitting in her car near 500 West and 200 South with the engine running and "a large amount" of cash sitting on top of her purse on the passenger's seat, said Salt Lake City police Detective Dennis McGowan. A man opened the unlocked passenger door, grabbed the money and ran. When she chased him, calling for help, he circled back to the car, jumped inside and drove off.

Police found the Oldsmobile Cutlass about 1:30 p.m. at 841 W. 700 North, said Salt Lake City police spokeswoman Lara Jones. The woman's purse was also recovered, but the cash was gone, Jones said.

The thief was described as 6 feet 2 inches tall, 180 pounds, dark-skinned with a shaved head, wearing a denim jacket, blue jeans and tennis shoes, and a possibly peach-colored shirt, McGowan said. Anyone with information can call 801-799-3000.
