A Cedar City woman remained in serious condition Thursday, nearly a week after she was hit by an SUV.

The 41-year-old woman may have been chasing her dog when she ran across State Route 56 near 4200 West on Oct. 30, said Cedar City police Detective Tim Bonzo. A man driving a 1996 Ford Explorer hit both her and the dog, killing the animal and throwing the woman about 40 feet, he said.

A police officer happened to be nearby and stopped to help the critically injured woman, who was flown by helicopter to Intermountain Medical Center with multiple internal injuries. The driver later told police he saw the woman and the dog and tried to swerve to no avail, Bonzo said.

Speed is not considered a factor in the crash and no citations have been issued, though the accident was still under investigation.
