Eight cargo train cars derailed near 1700 South and 500 West on Thursday morning.

The Union Pacific Railroad cars went off the tracks about 6:30 a.m., said Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman Mark Bednarik. There were no injuries, no cargo damage and no hazardous materials aboard, but 1700 South was closed near the site for cleanup.

Workers were building a train for a trip west when the cars derailed, said Dan Harbeke, a spokesman for the company. A few of the empty cars were damaged. The cars had been righted by about 2 p.m., but the area was still shut down for repairs to rails and signals. Union Pacific crews will investigate what went wrong.
