Dad charged with child abuse

Criminal charges were filed Wednesday against a 22-year-old father who police say threw a laundry basket at his 1-year-old son, hit him with a sandal and left him alone severely injured on a basement floor.

Humberto Enrique Alvarez, was charged Wednesday with five counts of child abuse, three are second-degree felonies and two are class A misdemeanors.

Salt Lake County jail booking documents state the boy was in his father's care for about a week while other family members were out of town.

The boy's grandmother found him on the basement floor Friday with bruises, injuries to the back of his head, a broken leg and cuts in his mouth. She took him to a hospital and police were called.

Alvarez told detectives he threw a laundry basket at his son, which caused the head injury, booking documents state. He also admitted to hitting him with a shoe, documents state.

It appears the father also placed tape over the toddler's mouth, charging documents state. According to doctors at Primary Children's Medical Center, the placement of tape on the boy's mouth was "a life-threatening act" because of the child's age and developmental level.
