Authorities have identified a man who was shot and killed Tuesday by Utah County sheriff's deputies near Utah Lake.

Todd Hainsworth, 50, pulled a handgun on deputies after a short chase, officers said.

Officers approached Hainsworth after receiving a call from a man who said he had taken 60 pills and was suicidal, according to Utah County sheriff's Lt. Darren Gilbert. Several gunshots were then heard over the phone, and the line went dead.

The man did not give his name or location, but dispatchers traced the cell phone call to a location near Lincoln Beach on the south shore of Utah Lake.

Two sheriff's deputies approached a vehicle there about 11 a.m., and Hainsworth rammed one of the cars and fled, Gilbert said. The deputies pursued his vehicle for about two miles before Hainsworth stopped, got out of car with a handgun and began threatening deputies, Gilbert said.

The officers shot and killed him, and both are now on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
