Davis County's biggest city saw one of the closest races between mayoral candidates.
Unofficial results show Layton Mayor Steve Curtis narrowly defeated challenger Bob J. Stevenson and had less than a 2 percentage point lead.
Curtis was celebrating the result at City Hall on election night and credited the presumed win to his grass-roots network of family, friends and neighbors who spread the message of his successful last four years.
"We're practically out of debt," Curtis said. "We haven't had problems with the downturn per se. We haven't had to have the layoffs. There hasn't been a depletion of services. The quality of life in Layton has continued to be excellent."
Bountiful residents voted nearly two-to-one for incumbent mayor Joe L. Johnson for a third term instead of electing local activist Jeffrey L. Novak. Incumbent Council members Fred Moss and Thomas B. Tolman will also stay at City Hall.
Centerville's roster isn't changing either. Incumbent Mayor Ronald Russell, who ran unopposed, and Council members Justin Allen and Sherri Lyn Lindstrom were all re-elected.
In several cities, the upcoming council meetings are likely to be a little bit awkward.
West Bountiful residents voted out Mayor James Behunin and chose Councilman Ken Romney as their new city boss.
Three Weber County races also featured intra-City Hall challengers. Farr West Mayor Jimmie Papageorge will continue leading the
In Roy, Mayor Joe H. Ritchie survived Councilman Dave Tafoya's opposition.
In South Ogden, Council members Vickie Mattson and James Minster both sought to replace the outgoing George Garwood; Minster won that battle.
In Uintah, incumbent Mayor Craig Kendell was ousted by newcomer Mike Keyes.
Washington Terrace residents appeared to want a whole new set of public leaders. Newcomers Robert Jensen and Val Shupe beat current Council members Matthew Thorngren and David VandenBosch. For mayor, the results are too close to call. Incumbent Mark C. Allen beat challenger Val L. Coles by about five votes, but provisional ballots remain uncounted.
