A 50-year-old Utah County man was shot and killed Tuesday by sheriff's deputies after he pulled a handgun on them following a short chase.

A man called Utah County dispatchers about 9:30 a.m., said he had taken 60 pills and was suicidal, according to Utah County sheriff's Lt. Darren Gilbert. Several gunshots were then heard over the phone.

"The dispatchers heard raspy breathing, and then the line went dead," Gilbert said.

The man did not give his name or location, but dispatchers traced the cell phone call to a location near Lincoln Beach on the south shore of Utah Lake.

Two sheriff's deputies approached the vehicle about 11 a.m., and the driver rammed one of the cars and fled, Gilbert said. The deputies pursued the man's vehicle for about two miles before the driver stopped, got out of car with a handgun and began threatening deputies, Gilbert said.

The officers shot and killed him, and both are now on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

Gilbert said the man's family is being notified and his name was not expected to be released until Wednesday.
