A security officer was hit in an exchange of gunfire at a Sugarhouse dance club early Sunday morning, police said.

Two club security guards went to break up a fight in the parking lot at Duvan's Karamba, 1049 E. 2100 South, about 1:45 a.m., said Salt Lake City police Lt. Cal Kunz. The guards confronted people they suspected to be involved, who were getting into a Toyota pickup truck.

"Apparently there was an exchange of gunfire between the security officers and suspects," Kunz said. One of the guards was hit by what looked to be a bullet fragment, Kunz said. He was taken to an area hospital in fair condition.

The suspects drove away. Police officers found the truck later that morning, but had not found the shooter or shooters as of Sunday. Anyone with information can call police at 801-799-3000.
