A 2-year-old boy was run over near a Kearns storage unit Saturday evening, police said.

The driver apparently did not see the boy at 4065 West and Sams Boulevard (5260 South), said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson.

He suffered critical injuries to his torso and was flown by medical helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center about 5:40 p.m. He was breathing and alert at the time. His parents were at the scene of the accident, and the driver appears to have been a friend or family member, Hutson said.

"This looks to be a tragic accident," he said.
