A large rock slide has closed part of the Alpine Loop in Utah County, police said.

No one was hurt and no one was trapped when a 40-yard-wide swath of rocks and mud slid onto State Road 92 in American Fork Canyon, said Utah Highway Patrol Jeff Nigbur.

The slide swept the entire eastbound side of the road into a creek about a quarter of a mile from a tollbooth at the bottom of the canyon, a few miles from Alpine and Highland.

"It was mostly made up of 3-by-4-foot rocks that did a lot of damage when they hit the roadway," Nigbur said. The slide was discovered at about 11 a.m., and Department of Transportation crews were clearing a path around noon for drivers stuck in the area.

The road was closed. Troopers sent traffic on the east side of the slide near Sundance Resort down Provo Canyon, and diverted traffic on the west side to one of several other routes, Nigbur said.

The Alpine Loop was scheduled to be closed for the winter Monday, and will likely be closed early for repairs, Nigbur said.
