A federal judge has fined a Nevada man $2,500 for failing to have his boat inspected for invasive species of mussels before launching his boat on Lake Powell.

According to the National Park Service, this is the first trial involving Glen Canyon National Recreation Area's mussel prevention regulations.

On Oct. 19, federal magistrate Robert T. Braithwaite found Jonny Ward guilty of violating a regulation that requires mandatory inspections for "at risk" boats entering Lake Powell. Ward was informed by park staff on Aug. 17 that he must have his boat inspected for zebra and quagga mussels, but he proceeded to Lone Rock Beach and launched his boat without that inspection.

Ward was issued a citation, and chose to go to trial.

Zebra and quagga mussels are invasive species that can cause serious economic and environmental problems for lakes and other waterways.
