Utah cities are planning fun events for children on Halloween weekend, but police are warning adults not to drive drunk.

Salt Lake City's public safety building will be the scene of a Halloween party from 1 and 5 p.m. today.

Parents and children can visit the building, 315 E. 200 South, to trick or treat the offices and have their pictures taken with the fire and police chiefs. Hogle Zoo will have snakes and lizards on display. Subway restaurants will provide children identification kits.

Park City is holding trick or treating on from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday on Main Street. The street will be closed to vehicle traffic and children can receive treats or see tricks from merchants. A dog parade follows at 5 p.m. Park City also is the place to see haunted houses and ghost galleries.

After the trick or treating is over, law enforcement will focus on making sure the streets are safe. The Utah Highway Patrol is planning a statewide drunken driving blitz Saturday night. The blitz made 343 arrests for driving under the influence last Halloween, according to UHP.

Halloween safety tips

» Go only to well-lit houses and accept treats only in the doorway. Never go inside a house.

» Carry your cell phone and flashlight.

» Travel in small groups and make sure than an adult or an older responsible youth will be supervising children under age 12.

» Pin a slip of paper with the child's name; address and phone number inside a pocket in case the youngster gets separated from the group.

» Bring treats home before eating them so parents can inspect them.

» Stay on sidewalks and avoid crossing yards.

» Cross streets at the corner, use crosswalks (where they exist) and do not cross between parked cars.

» Trust your instincts, leave right away if uncomfortable.
