A Provo man who beat his 4-month-old daughter to death last year will spend at least 20 years in prison, the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole announced Thursday.

Gardea, 23, is scheduled to have his first parole hearing in September 2028.

Gardea pleaded guilty to first-degree felony murder for punching Jasmine Gardea once in the head and once in the torso because she was crying on Sept. 8, 2008. The child died the next day. A 4th District judge sentenced him in September to prison for 15 years to life.
