A 16-year-old boy who fell through a skylight at a vacant elementary school has been released from the hospital and is back in school, police said.

The Cottonwood Heights teen was walking on the roof with a 16-year-old friend the afternoon of Oct. 13 when he fell, said Beau Babka of the Cottonwood Heights police.

He is "doing rather well," Babka said.

The boy, whose name was not released, landed headfirst in a kitchen prep area about 15 feet below, suffering critical injuries to his head and upper body.

The friend climbed through the broken skylight and pulled him out of the kitchen, setting off an alarm and alerting police.

Officers weren't sure what the two boys were doing on the roof. The 16-year-old is a student at Brighton High School, where other students later told The Salt Lake Tribune they often climb on roofs to "just chill."

On June 19, 2008, a 16-year-old Judge Memorial High School student died after falling 40 feet through a Bonneville Junior High skylight. Investigators said he had climbed onto the roof with a friend.
