A woman who shot herself in the face after a party early Sunday morning has died, police said.

The 29-year-old was at a friend's house in Sandy near 8400 South and 1300 East after a Halloween party when she fired the shot about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, said Sandy police Sgt. Justin Chapman.

She used a black handgun, but Chapman could not say how she got the gun or how the shooting happened.

"It sounds like there was a lot of drinking at the party," Chapman said. "My assumption is she had probably been drinking and that probably played into it."

Though the shooting was originally reported as accidental, Chapman said police are now investigating whether it could have been a suicide.
