An Orem homicide suspect called 911 to say he shot his brother-in-law seven or eight times, according to a court document.

Police on Sunday found the brother-in-law, Marvin Sidwell, dead inside the home near 400 South and 300 West. A police officer wrote in the court document that Marvin Sidwell, 51, received multiple gunshots to the head and body.

In a 911 call recording released by Orem police, Stephen E. Strate tells dispatchers he shot his brother-in-law after Sidwell "came after me with a damn chair."

Officers arrested the 54-year-old Strate after he made the 911 call. The officer also wrote a .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun was found on the front porch and was identified as what Strate had used and which matched the shell casings found with Sidwell.

Orem police on Sunday said Strate and Sidwell had some kind of dispute before the shooting but have not elaborated. Strate does not give a reason for the fight in his 911 call. The home is owned by the parents of Strate's wife, according to the court document.

A 4th District Court judge on Monday set Strate's bail at $1 million. Strate remained in the Utah County jail Monday afternoon on suspicion of murder. Formal charges had not been filed.
