Provo » A man was killed Wednesday afternoon when his single-engine aircraft crashed while trying to land at Provo Municipal Airport.
Deputy Fire Chief Gary Jolley said the pilot, Benjamin David Hill, 30, of Springville, radioed the airport's control tower that he was having an engine problem and was attempting to make a landing at the airport. Fire and rescue crews were notified, but by the time they arrived, the plane had crashed on the levee on the southwest side of the airport, short of Runway 36. Jolley said Hill was dead when crews arrived.
The plane did not burn, Jolley said, but there was a small fuel leak. He said it appeared the plane was going fast in an attempt to make it to the runway when it crashed.
Jolley said it was not known if the flight originated from Provo, but he said Hill was well known to airport staff.
Crews were securing the crash scene and awaiting the arrival of investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
