A former employee of a Salt Lake City nursing home has been sentenced to a year in jail for sexually abusing an elderly patient with Alzheimer's disease.

Clifford Ray Holt, 38, was charged in 3rd District Court with one count of second-degree felony forcible sexual abuse in connection with fondling a 62-year-old resident of Hillside Rehabilitation Center.

Holt pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a reduced count of class A misdemeanor sexual battery.

After Holt's plea, Judge Michele Christiansen immediately sentenced him to 365 days in jail.

On July 7, Holt, a dishwasher at the center, led the victim into a room, told her "this is my place" and started massaging her shoulders once the door to the room was closed, according to charging documents. He then grabbed the woman's breast aggressively enough to cause a bruise, charges state.

The woman, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, was able to report the incident.

Holt, who was on parole for a 2006 theft conviction, was returned to prison on a parole violation after his arrest in the sex-abuse case.
