A Roy Junior High School teacher has been charged with having a sexual relationship with a former student.

At least some of the sexual activity between 45-year-old woodshop teacher Ken Taylor and the now-17-year-old girl happened at the junior high, according to Roy Police Chief Greg Whinham, though the relationship did not begin until after she left the school.

The two met when she was a 14- or 15-year-old student and stayed in contact as she entered high school, though it isn't clear whether she took Taylor's class, Whinham said. He said the relationship turned sexual when the victim was 16, about 18 months ago.

"As the relationship became more inappropriate, the contact became more frequent," including by text message and telephone, Whinham said. "It's clearly someone, who is in a role who should know better, is using manipulation and promises and stuff that young people aren't supposed to have to worry about."

Someone became suspicious about the relationship and reported it to police Aug. 31.

Taylor was placed on paid leave the next day and resigned Sept. 9 from the Weber School District, said district spokesman Nate Taggart. Taylor had been a teacher at the school for about five years.

"We will certainly be reminding our employees of what constitutes appropriate and inappropriate behavior in the workplace, especially in an educational setting," Taggart said.

Taylor was charged Wednesday in 2nd District Court with six counts of unlawful sexual activity with a 16- or 17-year-old, a third-degree felony, said Weber County Attorney Dee Smith.
