A Monday morning Layton robbery turned out to be a hoax orchestrated by a Maverik convenience store employee, police said.

Layton Lt. Quinn Moyes said police got a 911 call at about 11 a.m. from the gas station at 849 E. Gordon Ave. The caller said one of the workers was robbed while he was leaving the Maverik store with a bank deposit.

Layton police and a Davis County police dog responded, but the dog was not able to track a suspect, Moyes said.

The worker told detectives he had walked out the store's east door toward his car. Before he got in, he told police that he noticed a wallet on the ground and bent down to pick it up. That's when someone came around the corner, kicked him in the face, knocked him unconscious and made off with the money, he said.

The worker told police he didn't see the thief -- only that he was wearing shorts and white tennis shoes with a distinct red stripe, Moyes said.

During a follow-up interview, Moyes said there were some inconsistencies in the worker's story and detectives learned that an injury to the man's face was self-inflicted. Moyes said the man used some sort of instrument to cause the wound.

Police found the bank deposit hidden at a nearby location. They recovered the money and returned it to the Maverik store, Moyes said.

The 29-year-old man was booked in to the Davis County jail on suspicion of second-degree felony theft and class B misdemeanor issuing a false statement to police.

Moyes said the man had worked at Maverik for nearly 18 months and it was customary for him to make the deposits.

Police determined the worker acted alone.
