A Cottonwood Heights pit bull was taken into custody by animal control officers Wednesday afternoon after it bit a postal worker.

The carrier was delivering mail when the dog bit him twice on the leg and once on the hand near 7600 South and 2325 East, said police Sgt. Mark Askerlund. He was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in fair condition with some "pretty deep" puncture wounds, Askerlund said.

The yard was not fenced. The pet owners will be cited for allowing a dog to run at large, a class C misdemeanor.

The dog will go to the shelter to determine whether its shots are current and the owners have a license. The dog was involved in another harassment incident about a year ago when it chased a person, but what to do with it now is up to the owners, Askerlund said.
