The commission formed by former Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. met and debated whether unlimited campaign contributions from "well-heeled donors" can corrupt the electoral process ("State commission debates campaign contribution caps," Tribune , Sept. 11). Duh! Do we really need to debate this subject? Not only history, but common sense would answer this question without any debate. Two-thirds of the American public believes that money can and does influence politicians and elections. But with no limits on what individuals or corporations can give, Utah stands out as one of only five states that believes money has no influence on elections or politician integrity.

Former Utah Republican Party Chairman Bruce Hough emphatically disagrees that money causes bad behavior among candidates. He stated that "the fundamental issue is not to be governed by perception" that politicians can be bought, "but to educate the citizenry on how they can have an influence and participate in the system." I guess he will be holding classes on how you too can buy a politician or how you can influence and participate in the system for a small fee!
