Smoking in Utah dipped to a new low in 2008, with only 9.1 percent of adults reporting they used cigarettes.

The adult smoking rate fluctuated in recent years, hitting 11.2 percent in both 2005 and 2007. But overall, the percentage of Utahns who smoke has dropped from 13.5 percent in 1999.

David Sundwall, executive director of the Utah Department of Health, credits the state's tobacco prevention and cessation program for last year's decrease. The state's annual report on the state's efforts notes that demand for smoking-cessation services went up by more than 36 percent compared with he previous fiscal year.
