Firefighters took advantage of favorable weather Friday to make significant progress on the Mill Flat Fire burning in steep mountains west of New Harmony.

Crews also made headway on the Sawmill Canyon Fire that has burned for a month south of Scipio in Millard County.

Kathy Jo Pollock, spokeswoman with the management team fighting the Mill Flat fire in Washington County, said all tools available including helicopters, fire engines and hand crews were used in Fridays' operation.

Pollock said because of the potential for flash flooding during thunderstorms that have been moving over the area in the afternoons, fire officials are coordinating with the county's emergency management services in the event that anything does occur.

The lightning caused fire started July 25 and smoldered until last weekend when winds drove it into New Harmony destroying three houses and damaging eight other structures.

Farther to the north along the Interstate 15 corridor, increased moisture in the air aided crews fighting the Sawmill Canyon Fire, said spokeswoman Lisa Reid.

"We had a few sprinkles today and things are going well," Reid said.
