A Salt Lake City man who was hit by a FrontRunner train while riding his bicycle Thursday night has died, a transit official said.

Heliadro Salgado, 57, was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition after the crash at 200 South and 600 West, said Utah Transit Authority spokesman Gerry Carpenter.

He died of his injuries about 9:20 p.m., close to three hours after the crash, Carpenter said. The crossing guard arms at the intersection were down and lights were flashing when Salgado apparently rode his bike into the crossing, Carpenter said. He was thrown under the train and pinned.

The train was moving slowly, about 5 to 10 miles per hour, and the driver was able to stop quickly. UTA is investigating the incident, but it doesn't appear that the train driver was at fault, Carpenter said.

He was placed on administrative leave during the investigation, which could take a few days.

"He probably didn't have time to react before the incident occurred," Carpenter said. "This is just a really tragic incident."
