A 16-year-old girl was critically injured when the BMW she was riding in left the roadway on Interstate 80 and rolled down a ravine in Parleys Canyon late Tuesday night.
The 19-year-old male driver, who was seriously injured, may have been speeding when the westbound car flew off a curve about 11 p.m., said Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Cameron Roden.
It rolled down the ravine, hit some trees and landed right-side up in a pool of water coming from a nearby drainage pipe. The two were partially submerged and pinned in the car by its crushed roof for just over an hour before emergency crews freed them.
The 16-year-old, who lives in West Valley City, was flown to University Hospital in critical condition, and the driver, who lives in the Salt Lake City area, was flown to Intermountain Medical Center in serious condition.
The man improved to fair condition Wednesday, while the girl is still in critical condition.
