A small plane that crashed in southeastern Idaho Friday, killing two people, took off from Ogden-Hinckley Airport and was bound for Alpine, Wyo., a federal investigator said Sunday.

The flaming wreckage of the Piper model PA-22-150 was found by all-terrain vehicle riders about 12:30 p.m. northeast of Preston, Idaho, just inside Franklin County. The fire started after the plane crashed, said Josh Cawthra, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board. It consumed the wreckage, he said.

Campers in the area had seen a plane matching its description fly overhead about 11:30 a.m., he said.

Both the pilot, Kevin Chambers of California, and a second person aboard the two-seater plane were killed. The Franklin County sheriff's office has not released the passenger's name.

The wreckage was removed from the small canyon in the remote, mountainous area Saturday and placed in storage for the investigation into what caused the crash. The plane was built in 1956, and last certified for air worthiness in 2004, according to its registration with the Federal Aviation Administration.

A preliminary report on the crash is expected by Friday, and a full factual report six months to a year later, Cawthra said.
