Contaminated tank sites in Yellowstone to be cleaned

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. » Seven contaminated underground storage tank sites in Yellowstone National Park are to be cleaned up starting this fall, under a partnership between the park and the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality.

The sites are among thousands nationwide from which fuel and other contaminants are leaking from aging underground tanks -- and polluting surrounding waters and soils.

Officials say $3.9 million will be spent to install cleanup and monitoring equipment at the sites. That equipment should be in place by late fall.

The cleanups will take four to 10 years to complete.

Contamination has been found at a park maintenance shop at Canyon, the Bridge Bay Marina and service stations at Grant Village, Fishing Bridge, Lake, Canyon and Old Faithful.
