A girl, 8, was in critical condition Monday night after search and rescue teams pulled her from the Provo River near Bridal Veil Falls on Monday afternoon.
The girl slipped into the water around noon during a family outing as her relatives were looking at the falls, said Provo Deputy Fire Chief Gary Jolley.
"The family tried to get her out, but they were unsuccessful," Jolley said. Two women in the family were taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center for evaluation after they suffered some minor bumps and bruises trying to get the girl out of the water.
Around 12:40 p.m. -- more than a half hour after the 911 call -- emergency crews pulled the girl from the river just below Nunns Park and performed CPR, said Utah County sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon.
The girl had been swept a mile down the river. At the site where she was found, the current held her under water in a seated position against a rock, Jolley said, adding that the water was moving "fairly fast."
Jolley said there is no way to know how long the girl was underwater. She may have been able to grasp onto branches or rocks for some time before she was found underwater, he said.
The girl was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center in critical condition. She was not breathing when searchers pulled her from the river, but responders said that her skin color was healthy given that she had just been submerged in a cold river, Jolley said.
