Cottonwood Heights police arrested a 24-year-old man after they say he chatted with a 13-year-old girl using the social-networking Web site MySpace, then came to Utah and raped her.

The man exchanged messages with the girl -- who represented herself as 16 to 18 years old -- for about two weeks before he traveled to Utah in June and stayed with the girl at her sister's Cottonwood Heights apartment, said Cottonwood Heights Detective Beau Babka.

An affidavit filed with the Salt Lake County jail said sexual contact occurred between the man and girl several times between June 8 and June 30.

Police learned of the incidents after the 13-year-old told her father, and he, in turn, called police.

The man has prior convictions in California for sex with a minor, making a terroristic threat and a weapons violation, Babka said. Investigators are reviewing his computer to determine whether there are other victims, Babka said.

The man was booked into the Salt Lake County jail Monday night on suspicion of one first-degree felony count of object rape of a child. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
