A lightning-sparked wildfire near the Sanpete and Utah counties' border will be allowed to burn, U.S. Forest Service officials said.

The blaze in the Lake Fork Canyon area will be monitored and Forest Service and firefighters will suppress it if lives or property are threatened, said Brandon Hoffman, a spokesman for the Manti-La Sal National Forest. Natural wildfires are important to the pinyon-juniper ecosystem, he said.

The fire started Thursday and is located about 8 miles north of Indianola and 2 miles southeast of Birdseye. Smoke and flames may be visible from North Skyline Drive and along U.S. routes 89 and 6 for the next few weeks, depending on weather conditions and the fire's movement.
