What is unemployment insurance?

It's a source of temporary income for eligible workers who lose jobs through no fault of their own, while they are searching for full-time work, receiving approved job training or awaiting recall to employment.

When should I apply for benefits?

Officials advise filing on or after your last day of work. It can take up to four weeks to determine eligibility.

Can the Department of Workforce Services turn down my application for benefits?

Yes, but both you and your employer have the right file an appeal if either thinks the department's decision on your eligibility was incorrect.

Your written appeal will get you a hearing before an administrative law judge, but it must be filed within 15 days of the initial decision being mailed to you.

If I qualify, what determines my weekly benefit amount?

Benefits are based on what you earned in a base period of the first four of the past five quarters, up to a maximum of $444 a week.

How many weeks of unemployment insurance can I receive?

Your number of weeks is determined by multiplying your total wages paid during the base period by 27 percent then dividing by your weekly benefit amount. Utah has a minimum of 10 weeks and a maximum of 26 weeks of regular benefits, although the recent federal stimulus package has extended that by up to an additional 26 weeks.

What if I quit my job or was terminated? Can I still qualify for benefits?

Unemployment benefits are only available to those who are unemployed through no fault of their own and are willing to accept full-time work.

How will I receive my payments?

The state of Utah prefers direct deposit into you personal checking or savings account or delivering benefits on a Utah EPPICARD, which works like a debit card. Paper checks are no longer issued.

Are there work search requirements to receive unemployment insurance?

Yes. You must make at least two new contacts for full-time work each week by contacting employers not contacted before. These can be in person, by telephone, online or by faxing or e-mailing your résumé. State officials conduct spot checks to confirm eligibility.
