A propane leak at the Zion Lodge in southern Utah's Zion National Park sent one man to the hospital and led to an evacuation of the area near Springdale.

The lodge alerted authorities to the leak at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, saying an employee was suffering from gas inhalation, said Ron Terry, the park's public information officer.

There was a leak in the main line coming from a propane tank behind a public restroom at the lodge shuttle stop. About 250 people were evacuated from the restroom, shuttle stop and main lodge building.

The line was shut down at 9:55 a.m., Terry said. It was running from one of four tanks in the area.

"With the shutdown of the tank, we waited for the wind to dissipate the propane that was in the air," he said.

The man suffering from inhalation was treated at the scene and taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center. David Eaker, another public information officer for Zion, said the employee was trying to turn off the gas when he was overcome.

The propane is used for the lodge building's heating system and kitchen. Eaker said everything has returned to normal and visitors won't notice any difference.
