Firefighters responded to a grass brush fire as fireworks burned about 3 acres at Bywater Park in Cottonwood Heights.

It took crews a couple of hours to put out hot spots.

Four nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution for about 40 minutes, but no private property was damaged in the fire.

"It was more about the smoke in the air," said Captain Clint Smith of the Unified Fire Authority.

Fire investigators do not know if the fireworks were classified as Utah-legal, but add that it is not yet legal to light any fireworks in the state. Utahns may light fireworks three days before the holiday, on the holiday and three days after the holiday.
