Mosquitoes in Utah County have tested positive for West Nile virus, almost a month earlier than last year, officials said.

The Utah Department of Health set up traps Wednesday and received the test results Friday. Utah County is the fifth county in the state to have confirmed West Nile-infected mosquitoes.

There are no confirmed human cases in Utah, but people are urged to apply mosquito repellents with DEET and to remove standing water around their homes. Bug spray is especially important to apply after sunset, when mosquitoes carrying West Nile emerge.

In 2008, 27 Utahns were infected, with no fatalities. Two of the 70 human cases in 2007 were fatal.

Mosquito-abatement workers around the state will continue to spray swamps, wetlands, bushes and standing water.
