A missing 95-year-old Provo man was found Saturday after spending the night near an elevated sidewalk, unable to move due to injuries suffered in a fall. George Jarvis tumbled 40 feet down a steep embankment during a hike Friday, said Provo police Officer Jay Barney. He suffered broken bones and cuts in the fall, and was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, then transferred to University Hospital, Barney said.

More than 100 people, including several police teams, searched for Jarvis, who was last seen about 11:30 a.m. Friday.

He was found about 24 hours later when a motorist stopped at a red light at 5200 N. University Ave. noticed something unusual. She looked east, spotted what first appeared to be a piece of cardboard, but was Jarvis moving his leg. She called 911.

Jarvis was conscious and alert when police arrived.

The man was reported missing after he left to go for a hike. Witnesses saw him in Canyon View Park in Provo Canyon about 6 p.m., and officers believe he was heading back when he fell less than a mile from his home. A helicopter had searched the area where he was found, but the spot was overgrown with waist-high weeds and covered by a large tree, obscuring him from view.
