Utah Latinos can find tips for recognizing and preventing strokes at a new Web site offered in Spanish by the Utah Department of Health.
The site offers information about types and symptoms of stroke, and explains how diet and exercise can reduce the risks.
It is located at http://www.health.utah.gov/tucorazon/.
"With this vital resource, we are now able to clearly communicate the facts about stroke to the largest minority population in the state," said Tania Charette, media coordinator for the department's Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program, in a statement.
"It provides testimonials from Hispanic stroke survivors, a quiz to test their knowledge about stroke, and other important stroke resources," she said. "We're confident the site will ultimately help Hispanics learn how to keep themselves healthier and avoid strokes."
Although risk factors are similar across the population, Latinos have a higher risk of death or disability due to strokes. Studies also indicate that Latinos have a higher rate of hemorrhagic strokes (bleeding in the brain as opposed to a blood clot) at a younger age than non-Hispanic whites.
