The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office has identified Gregory M. Nelson, 35, of West Jordan, as the man whose body was found in a burning car last week near Saltair.

On March 20, deputies responded about 10 p.m. to a frontage road off Interstate 80 where they found a burning 2001 Malibu Chevy. In addition to Nelson's burned body, they found two small propane tanks and a gas or paint thinner can. Investigators think the blaze was intentionally set, said Salt Lake County sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson.

The Utah Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy on Nelson's body but was unable to determine if the cause of death was suicide or a homicide, Hutson said. Detectives are still investigating the case and "trying to trace all the steps of Mr. Nelson," Hutson said. Nelson's death is similar to that of another man whose body was found March 9 in a burned car in a campground in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Both deaths are still being investigated as suspicious. Investigators have not found evidence suggesting foul play in either death, and there is no evidence they are connected, Hutson said.
