A 72-year-old Kanab resident who was one of the original founders of Best Friends Animal Society in southern Utah was killed on Tuesday morning when his vehicle rolled on a county road.
Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Cameron Roden said Ernst Paul Eckhoff, 72, of Kanab died at the scene of the crash four miles west of U.S. 89 on the Hancock Road.
Roden said it appears Eckhoff's Land Rover drifted off the left side of the two-lane road and Eckhoff overcorrected, causing the vehicle to roll 1½ times.
Eckhoff, who was wearing a seat belt, was alone in the vehicle.
He was one of the original founders of Best Friends, located five miles north of Kanab, which has grown into the country's largest no-kill animal sanctuary.
