A West Valley City man was charged in 3rd District Court with third-degree felony aggravated assault for allegedly beating his girlfriend and hitting her in the head with deer antlers during the attack.

The 34-year-old man is accused of grabbing his girlfriend by the throat, throwing her against the wall and punching her repeatedly in the face until she lost consciousness, according to charging documents filed Tuesday.

He then hit her in the head with deer antlers, which caused a "large hematoma on the back of her head" after the March 13 attack, court documents state. The assault took place at the apartment the two shared at 3550 South Mark IV Court (2900 West) in West Valley City in front of two small children who were home at the time, according to court documents.

In addition to assault, he was charged with two counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child, a third-degree felony, and class C misdemeanor intoxication.

The man has a previous history of domestic violence cases filed against him in West Valley City Justice Court. He is being held in the Salt Lake County jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.
