Two people died Wednesday night in a head-on collision in Uintah County, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.

The crash involving 48-year-old Timothy Reynolds, of Vernal, and 30-year-old Chad Porter, of Provo, occurred about 5:30 p.m. on State Road 40 just west of Gusher, said UHP spokesman Cameron Roden.

Reynold's Chevy Silverado pickup apparently crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with Porter's Dodge Ram pickup, Roden said.

The roads were dry at the time of the crash and rain and snow that began blanketing northern Utah on Wednesday night were not factors in the crash, Roden said.

Reynolds apparently was not wearing his seat belt. It was unclear if Porter was wearing his, Roden said.

State Road 40 in the area of the crash was closed for about three hours. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
