Utah House OKs bill to limit absentee voting

A bill that would stop voters from casting absentee ballots after the Friday before Election Day cleared the House on Thursday.

HB390, said sponsor Rep. John Mathis, R-Vernal, would help county clerks in rural areas ensure their voting rolls were up to date before a Tuesday election.

Rep. Jim Bird, R-West Jordan, argued against the measure, saying that Salt Lake County had 5,800 voters cast ballots on the Saturday and Monday before last year's election, and Mathis' bill would disenfranchise such voters.

The bill passed 49-26 and goes to the Senate.
