Westminster honored for community service
The Corporation for National and Community Service has placed Salt Lake City's Westminster College on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
"We are thrilled that Westminster College has been named to the Honor Roll for the third consecutive year," said Gary Daynes, associate provost for Integrative Learning at the private college, in a press release announcing the honor. "This recognition is evidence that Westminster's students, staff and faculty are deeply committed to community service and to the learning that comes from it."
The Community Service Honor Roll acknowledges a school's commitment to service learning and civic engagement. Honorees are chosen based on a series of factors including scope and innovation of service projects; percentage of students participating in service activities; incentives for service; and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.
U. hosts conference on human aggression
Experts in anthropology, biology, psychology and other fields will gather at the University of Utah Feb. 25-27 to debate how evolution has shaped human aggression and violence, from war to domestic abuse and homicide.
"What evolutionary forces underlie human violence, and how can we use this knowledge to promote a more peaceful society?" said Elizabeth Cashdan, a conference organizer and professor and chair of anthropology at the University of Utah.
"The Evolution of Human Aggression: Lessons for Today's Conflicts" will be held at various locations, mostly at Fort Douglas on the University of Utah campus. The conference is free and open to the public.
Highlights include keynote lectures on the evolution of peacemaking among primates and the relationship between homicide and economic competition; panel discussions on conflict and reconciliation among great apes, violence and warfare, hormones and human aggression, and domestic violence; a scientific poster session; and a community forum on violence.
