A small fire near the University of Utah's student union caused minor damage to a building Saturday morning.
Salt Lake City firefighters responded to reports of a fire on campus at 10:12 a..m., said Deputy Fire Chief Devin Villa. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they discovered the smoldering remains of what had been a fire in a fire pit near the student union, Villa said.
Flames appeared to have spread from the fire pit to an overhang at the student union and caused about $5,000 in property damage, Villa said. No one was injured. Fire officials are investigating how the fire spread from the pit, he said.
